The second part of Shoormal is a short documentary featuring three of the original researchers involved in the "Poverty is Bad - Let's Fix It!!" peer research group.
Maddrim Media are delighted to announce the public launch of Shoormal, a film made in partnership with the Poverty Is Bad - Let's Fix It!! peer research project into poverty, social exclusion and inequality in Shetland.
Chris actually studies Mathematics at Cambridge, where he has a reputation for being "very enthusiastic" about the subject.
Chris's own parents found the task of participating in this documentary too harrowing, so Anne and Leslie stood in to re-enact these depicted true events.
It has become a tradition within the Maddrim calendar to dedicate a meeting to making a Halloween themed film (and the same goes for Christmas!). A lack of light, prepartion and props usually make these films practically impossible to watch, but they absolutely wonderful to make!
This year we exceeded ourselves with props. There was a whole table of them! And face paint!
The demise into a concluding sexual innuendo is also an unfortunate(?) traditional aspect for these holiday specials.
Aidan despises the word beach. You have no idea how much.
The aerial shots are not archive footage, Aidan and Roseanne really got to go on a helicopter and film the beach!
Puzzle (the dog) was kept still in the grave scene by placing a biscuit in front of him and telling him to stay. Unfortunately, this caused him to drool uncontrollably, so the shot had to be taken from behind in order to disguise this fact!
This film began when it was joked that Mhairi should make a film (having been in media club for 3 years and yet never having made her own film). And somehow, she pulled it off!
All of the background sets were designed from scratch by Jason and here are some shots of the spaceship's bridge and Spacebot's quarters:
The props budget for the entire Screenplay festival took a big hit when Harry bought the gold material for the excellent shiny costumes.
Thanks to the Shetland College for letting us destroy the college - we didn't actually ruin anything, which is a record for Maddrim...
This was filmed in an hour and a half.
We tried our darndest to make that pregnancy test positive, even considering asking a pregnant woman to pee on the test for us... we could say we didn't because we know when we're going to far, but we actually couldn't find a pregnant woman to ask.
This was originally a short story written by Roseanne!
Amanda Palmer (Another Year, from "Who Killed Amanda Palmer")
Fun facts!
This film was conceived and filmed all in one evening (just over an hour, where most of the time was spent trying to find tennis rackets...).
Gengus is a very stupid dog - and when we tried to get him to sit still by giving him a squeaky chew toy, he instead ran away cause he didn't like the squeaking noise.
Mhairi and Chris joked that this would be a best film of the festival (they've convinced themselves it is!). Simon Miller's daughter said it was her favorite which has significantly boosted the ego's of Mhairi and Chris who now refuse to associate themselves with the rest of the group, and insist they are carried around on a throne.
We're sorry, very sorry. You have to understand - this film was just a big mistake waiting to happen... four friends trapped on Mousa; they all die horrifically in a Final Destination-esque style. At least their dead now, no chance for a sequel!
Fun facts
We woke up at 3am to film Masks. After this we had to finish Stallion Head and then went to St Ninian's (and later Mousa) to make this film. You have to understand how tired we were, explaining the poor quality
This film began with the plot premise of aliens using Mousa Broch as a base for their evil activities - and a war with trowies and other such thing happening. Unfortunately (or luckily) we didn't have time. :(
